Case File: Morrissey, Shane D.

NYPD / Homicide Division — Confidential Summary

Date: November 1, 2001
Case No.: 01-1131-NY
Classification: Multiple Homicide — Self-inflicted

Summary: Subject identified as Shane “Dio” Morrissey (DOB 11/03/1981) was found deceased in an abandoned subway maintenance corridor near the Metropolitan Avenue station at approximately 3:24 AM. Scene investigation indicates apparent self-inflicted wounds.

Surrounding the body were several Polaroid photographs depicting the victims of three recent unsolved homicides in the 9th Street area. Each image bears similar staging and composition. Victims were previously connected only by shared geography and time frame.

Additional evidence recovered at the scene includes a sketchbook containing charcoal portraits of each victim, as well as a blood-stained camera. Written across the final page: “I finally made something beautiful.”

Autopsy revealed no controlled substances in the bloodstream, but severe exhaustion and malnutrition. Witness statements from neighbors describe the subject as “quiet,” “withdrawn,” and “up all night drawing.” One former acquaintance reports a history of hallucinations linked to sleep deprivation.

The train line in question—formerly the M Line extension—was officially decommissioned in 1999. No trains were active in that tunnel at the time of death.

Notes

A single Polaroid left on-site shows the subject’s reflection in a cracked mirror, faint smile visible. The word “WELCOME BACK” is etched into the glass.
